Genre and Auteur
Genre is the way in which we categorise films. They all have
their own set of codes and conventions which are adhered to by directors. E.g.
Imperial Dreams is a drama/social realist film that tries to capture life as it
really is. Other social realist films share similar techniques to this.
Clip 1 – The
Hangover
This is from the comedy genre and the technical codes tell
us this because the clip starts off with the guys waking up from a rough night
of partying and not remembering what happened. This comes under the comedy
genre because of the goofy and laugh out loud jokes they say, or even the
things they do. This clip shows that it is a comedy because when the character
notices the tiger in the bathroom but does nothing apart from still going to
the toilet and then he suddenly realises it and runs off screaming, this shows
the audience that he is still trying to wake up and is really scared. The
mise-en-scene really shows that this is a comedy because their hotel room is
completely trashed from the night before and they have goofy objects in their
room.
Clip 2 – Star Trek
into Darkness
This film is from the science fiction genre. We can tell
from this because the opening scene is on a different planet. The main cast in
this film are trying to get to their spaceship and fly out of the atmosphere.
We know this is a science fiction film because of the use of the spaceships and
costume. The main character Spock is wearing a spacesuit which again clearly
indicates it is part of the sci-fi genre. This film could also be part of the
action/adventure genre because of the cinematography and editing because they
are quick sharp shots of the characters running away from enemies, and also
when the character Spock is on the volcano stopping the eruption.
Clip 3 – The
Expendables 2
This film comes from the action adventure genre and we know
this because of the wide use of guns explosion and the cast that is behind it,
which is Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham and Arnold Schwarznegger. We can see
it is from this genre because of the technical codes used the cinematography
and editing is very fast paced to go along with the action that is happening.
Clip 4 – Fish Tank
Fish tank is a social realist film and we can tell this
because it deals with real life issues that occur everyday with people. Also on
top of that the mise-en-scene is very noticeable to anyone as it is set on an
estate which everyone can notice or relate to, on top of that the costumes the
characters are wearing as they are everyday clothes such as tracksuits. Also
the cinematography used in the extract are long takes which again defines the
social realism genre.
